Overview
Expedition Overview
Nuptse: The Guardian of the Everest Massif
Nuptse shares in the glory of the Everest Massif, forming the southern border of the Western Cwm. It is connected to Lhotse via Tenzing Peak, and from Kalapatthar, Nuptse appears as a massive wall guarding the approach to Everest. At 7861 meters, Mt. Nuptse is the highest among 7000-meter peaks and is considered one of the toughest and most technical climbs. The peak was first ascended on May 16, 1961, by British national Dennis Davis and Nepali national Sherpa Tashi via the north ridge, known as the Scott-route. The name 'Nup-tse' comes from the Tibetan language, meaning "west peak." The summit of Nuptse is extremely dangerous due to loose snow with many hollows and weakly attached cornices of snow. These features present significant barriers to climbing, making the ascent particularly perilous. When viewed from the Tengboche Monastery, Nuptse emerges as a formidable wall guarding Mount Everest.
