Overview

Expedition Overview

Towering above the Nepalese Himalayas, Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest peak at 8,163 meters (26,781 ft), earns its nickname "Mountain of the Spirit" with its majestic presence. Located in the Gorkha District, this peak stands out from its neighbors with a sharp summit, 64km east of Annapurna. First summited in 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, Manaslu's official climbing expeditions only began in 1991. Despite earlier explorations, the region maintains a sense of remoteness, attracting experienced trekkers who can navigate the challenging terrain. Compared to other 8,000-meter peaks like Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma, Manaslu's ascent is more technical. Climbers start their journey from the 4,700-meter base camp, choosing from several routes with varying difficulty. The most common route follows the northeast face, while the south face offers a more formidable challenge.

Itinerary

Your arrival in Nepal begins at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). After disembarking from your flight, follow the signs for immigration. If required, have your passport and visa application ready for the formalities. Once you've cleared immigration, collect your luggage from the baggage claim area. Exiting the arrivals hall, keep an eye out for your trip leader holding a sign with your name or tour group name. If you don't see them immediately, don't fret! There's usually a designated waiting area, or you can simply wait by the exit for a few minutes. Your friendly trip leader will then assist you with your luggage and guide you to your transportation for the comfortable transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu.
Your first two days in Kathmandu will be dedicated to acclimatization and preparing for your exciting climb. This is a crucial time to ensure you're ready for the adventure ahead. Here, you'll have a chance to meet your fellow climbers and get to know the team you'll be sharing this experience with. Your trip leader will also provide a comprehensive briefing to detail the climb and answer any questions you may have. Don't forget, there's also the option to explore the captivating city of Kathmandu during these days, soaking up the local culture before embarking on your expedition.
Our adventure begins with a scenic drive west on the Prithvi Highway. This road follows theTrishuli River, offering stunning views of Nepal's rural beauty – verdant hills, cascading rivers, charming villages, and the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre Himalayas in the distance. After reaching Dumre, we'll take a branch road towards Besisahar and continue on to Jagat, our stop for the night at a cozy lodge.
Our trek begins with a descent from Jagat village. We'll follow a winding path alongside the Marsyangdi River, entering a cool, verdant forest. Emerging from the woods, we reach Chamje village (1430m). Here, we cross the river and continue along its eastern bank.

The trail then ascends gently to the larger village of Tal (1675m). Nestled amongst teahouses and lodges, Tal offers a perfect lunch stop. Enjoy a delicious meal in a serene atmosphere, taking in the mesmerizing views of the surrounding valleys.

Refreshed, we embark on a gradual climb towards Karte village. Expect to cross the Marsyangdi River at several points as we navigate charming villages nestled in the valley. Our day concludes in Dharapani, a picturesque village where we'll spend the night.
Today, we bid farewell to the Annapurna Circuit trek and embark on the path towards Larkya La Pass. Our destination for the night is Gao.
Today's trek tackles a significant climb, gaining over 1000 meters in elevation as we make our way to Bhimthang.
An early start today! We tackle a short climb to a scenic glen overlooking the Larkya Glaciers. This vantage point offers stunning views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. From here, we traverse the moraine, making a gradual ascent that steepens towards the final section of the pass.
Reaching Larkya La Pass itself is a rewarding moment, with breathtaking panoramas of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and the majestic Annapurna II.

While today's trek to Samdo is longer than usual, the reward is an unforgettable experience. Descent into the lower pastures under the evening fog, with Manaslu looming in the distance, creates a truly memorable scene.
Bidding farewell to Samdo, we follow the riverbank along the main trail. Our path soon leads us to the sprawling fields of Sama Gaon, nestled at an elevation of 3530 meters.
Today's focus is on rest and acclimatization in the charming village of Sama Gaon. Immerse yourself in Buddhist culture as you explore the village, encountering sights like thousands of mani stones adorned with Buddhist texts and pictures. Women dressed in traditional attire add to the vibrant atmosphere.

A short hike up a nearby hill rewards you with breathtaking views of the glacier and Pungyen Gompa, an ancient monastery named after Manaslu. The name "Pungyen," meaning "bracelet," aptly describes the two peaks encircling the monastery.

Legend has it that the locals initially opposed the first Japanese Manaslu expedition, believing it angered the gods. This resistance forced the climbers to abandon their attempt in 1956. Thankfully, they succeeded in their return trip in 1959.
An early start sets the stage for today's challenging trek to Manaslu Base Camp. Prepare for a roughly 5-hour uphill climb followed by a 3-hour descent. Be sure to pack plenty of food and water to stay fueled throughout the day.

The trail from Samagaon winds through forested areas before reaching the steeper slopes above the village, leading north of the Manaslu Glacier. The final ascent is the most demanding, tackling a slippery path on a tapered moraine.

Despite the difficulty, the reward is magnificent. Manaslu Base Camp offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Here, you'll set up camp for the night, surrounded by the majestic Himalayan grandeur.
Today serves as a crucial rest day at Manaslu Base Camp. This downtime allows for both mental and physical preparation for the upcoming challenges of Manaslu.

In keeping with Sherpa tradition, a special Puja ceremony will be held. This ceremony serves to seek blessings for a safe and successful ascent of Manaslu. Witnessing this cultural experience adds another layer to your Manaslu adventure.
The next few days are dedicated to acclimatization rotations, a vital step for summit success. This process involves multiple trips to higher camps, returning to lower camps for rest in between. These gradual ascents allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.

Expect slow, deliberate climbs as we navigate the steep sections of moraines and glaciers. By the end of this phase, we will have established and stocked four camps in preparation for the final summit push.
After thorough acclimatization at Base Camp, we'll embark on our ascent, tackling each camp in stages. Here's a glimpse of what to expect:

Camp I (5,700m): A rugged path of moraine and glacier leads us to Camp I. Expect crevasses, small ice steps, and epic views of the surrounding mountains. From here, you'll even catch a glimpse of the route towards Camp IV.

Camp I to Camp II (6,400m): This section gets technical. The trail traverses longer stretches of vertical snow and ice, requiring fixed ropes installed by our expert Sherpas for safety as we navigate sections with small, carved steps. Expect this climb to take 4-6 hours.

Camp II to Camp III (6,900m): A moderately steep climb of 5-7 hours takes us from Camp II to Camp III. The route utilizes small ice steps and slopes, offering a more straightforward path.

Camp III to Camp IV: Prepare for another 5-7 hours of strenuous climbing to reach Camp IV. Here, we'll rest and prepare for the final summit push.

Camp IV to Summit (8,163m) and Descent: The summit climb itself is not technical, but it demands exceptional physical strength due to the high altitude. Our Sherpas will strategically place cables where needed to aid our ascent. Finally, you'll conquer the eighth highest mountain in the world! Capture this momentous occasion with photos before beginning the long descent back to Base Camp. A celebratory dinner awaits us, followed by a well-deserved overnight stay at Base Camp.
Before departing Base Camp, we'll ensure a clean departure by properly disposing of all our waste. Following responsible trekking practices, we'll then retrace our steps down the mountain, eventually reaching Samagaon for our overnight stay.
This morning, we bid farewell to the Manaslu region with a thrilling helicopter flight back to Kathmandu. Enjoy the breathtaking aerial views during this scenic journey. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you'll be transferred back to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to unwind and pamper those tired muscles after your incredible expedition.
Your final day offers a chance to unwind at your hotel's courtyard or explore Kathmandu's shops at your own pace. As evening falls, a celebratory farewell dinner awaits, complete with a mesmerizing cultural dance performance by local artists. Savor the delicious meal and celebrate your successful Manaslu conquest. If you wish to extend your stay in this captivating city, simply let us know!
The bittersweet farewell arrives. We'll assist you with last-minute preparations and ensure a smooth transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport three hours before your flight. Enjoy your safe journey home, and we hope to see you explore the wonders of Nepal again soon!
